Four-star WR Jayden Warren breaks down his film

Jayden Warren, the Iowa Colony speedster and consensus four-star, committed to Houston on 713 Day. Talent is an understatement when describing Warren: At nearly 6’2” and 200 pounds, he boasts a 10.16 100m dash. That combination of size and verified speed makes clear why schools around the nation were after him.

Jayden’s athletic ability is evident on film, but what stood out more in our recent conversation was his calm confidence and easy-going demeanor. But what surprised me was his recall. Although I didn’t have a reference point for his memory, when reviewing his junior season film, he had photographic recall for every play in real-time: Down and distance, score, the defense he was facing, and the play call. Warren is not resting on his physical ability – he takes time to study the game.

“I would like to think I have a photographic memory, but I do watch film a lot,” he said.

Warren studies film the right way, using it to improve his on-field performance. His route tree has expanded from a deep threat downfield to working in the slot and running a wider range of routes.

His ceiling is high, and despite his talent, he has considerable room for improvement. The level of detail that goes into being a great track athlete will benefit him when honing in on the precision required to get open at the next level.

Even with all the detail and intricacies that we were discussing, it was great to hear some good old-fashioned receiver confidence from Warren.

“I’m one of the fastest kids in the state of Texas, let’s just run,” Warren says in regard to his speed in the open field.

Having run track for years, he has developed a relationship with Houston track coach and Olympic legend, Carl Lewis. Warren has considered running track at the next level. He isn’t closing that chapter off completely, but will only continue if it doesn’t interfere with his development on the gridiron.

“I plan on coming in in January and making an impact statement… coming in and trying to start as a freshman,” Warren said.
