UH commits and targets dominate at 7-on-7 state tournament

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football hosted its annual 7-on-7 state tournament this weekend in College Station. GoCoogs has partnered with Dave Campbell’s for four years on content, podcasts, and more.

Several Houston commits and targets participated and put up excellent performances.

Braden Baker, QB, Cy Ranch (2027 commit)

I mentioned this on Sunday night’s Talk Around Towns, but the thing that really stands out about Baker is his demeanor. His body language does not indicate the situation. In their loss to Keller Central, Cy Ranch went down 21-6 in the first half, but Baker never showed any stress.

He didn’t press to push the ball when it wasn’t there, took what the defense gave him, and capitalized on his downfield opportunities. He did not look like a guy heading into his senior year of high school. A four-second call negated what would’ve been the go-ahead score on an extra point conversion (in 7-on-7, the 4-second rule demands the quarterback to release the ball within 4 seconds of the snap; otherwise, the play is ruled dead).

Houston’s future signal-caller had a very good weekend.

Tristin “TK” Gaines, QB, Waller (2028 offer)

Gaines is already a national recruit, but the Coogs are making a push to keep him home. He showed off his big arm in an impressive weekend performance. His baseball background allows him to throw across his body and from different angles with relative ease.

TK is on the other end of the spectrum from Baker in terms of demeanor. He shows fire and is willing to get in a defender’s face after a big play. Even without pads on, the competition and result matter to the Waller signal caller. His star will continue to rise.

Isaiah Taylor // © 2026 by Martin Marroquin

Isaiah Taylor, ATH, Keller Central (2028 offer)

Taylor was the MVP for the Division 1 bracket, leading Keller Central to the championship while playing both sides of the ball. Playing QB, he regularly pushed the ball downfield and responded whenever the team needed him on offense, including a touchdown on the final play of the tournament to win it all.

His defensive ability was even more impressive. Taylor’s coaches believe that when breaking on a pass, his first step is so quick that it disrupts a QB’s timing, even on checkdowns and ‘easy’ throws. That ability showed up all tournament as he hauled in six interceptions. Including an interception in the championship that looked like something out of Madden. His timing and ball skills to snatch the ball out of the air at the goal line prevented a big score for Allen.

Other commits/targets that participated

Tavon Bolden, S, Atascocita (2027 commit)
Julian Reese, ATH, Palo Duro (2027 offer)
Dominic Butler, CB, Allen (2028 offer)
James Skaer, TE, College Park (2028 offer)
Lincoln Frazier, QB, Willis (2029 offer)

Players to monitor

Kameron Brown, WR, West Rusk (2028)

Brown won the MVP for the D2/D3 bracket. Houston has yet to make an offer, but I don’t anticipate that will be the case for much longer. He is listed at 6’3’ 190, and he uses every bit of that frame to win jump balls regularly. His ability to float in the air and win despite double or even triple coverage was impressive.

He plays CB as well, but his future is catching touchdowns. His highlights show him as a deep threat, routinely running past defenses. Brown possesses the fluidity to set up blocks and make defenders miss in space. There won’t be an area of the field he can’t attack at the next level.

Madden Weaver, ATH, Hamilton (2029)

Weaver won’t hit a college campus for another three years, but it’s obvious he’ll be a target for major programs. He currently has offers from Texas Tech and Texas State. He said that those were the only two camps he attended this summer. That number will balloon as he gets more film this upcoming season.

The projection is that Weaver would fill out his current 6’4’ frame as he matures and becomes a TE at the next level. But he moves with such fluidity that it’s not crazy to think that he could just be a large receiver on the outside. He had several pick-sixes along with offensive touchdowns over the weekend.

Others to monitor

Jeremiah Taylor, ATH, Keller Central (2028 – twin brother of Isaiah)
Trey Finney, WR, Willis (2028)
