Houston signs Oregon transfer Ashton Porter

Once again, the Coogs have added quality to the 2026 transfer portal. The staff prioritized the city of Houston in high school recruiting and in the transfer portal, and six of their portal signings so far are returning home. No player is causing more buzz with his return home than Ashton Porter.

Porter attended Cy-Ranch HS and was heavily recruited by Wille Fritz when he was at Tulane. UH assistant head coach and QB coach Shawn Bell also heavily recruited him while he was at Baylor. UH recruited him, as well. Porter was part of the 2023 class who initially committed to Northwestern before deciding to go to Oregon. Here’s a look at why over 30 teams across the country offered him out of high school:

In his first two seasons in Eugene, Porter didn’t see much action, playing just 44 defensive snaps. Oregon made a 2025 playoff run, and he played in all 15 games, logging 244 defensive snaps. His season high for snaps came against James Madison in their blowout win.

Porter played 31 defensive snaps against the Dukes and had his most productive game as a pass rusher. In 23 pass rush attempts, he recorded four pressures, including a sack. He did a good job using power to drive the tackle back and collapse the pocket.

He had two tackles against Indiana in the national semifinal last Friday night. Porter played in all three playoff games, playing 65 snaps (27% of his season total).

Porter went to college at 265 lbs but is now listed at 290. He doesn’t look quite as fluid as he did in high school, but I think he still moves well. And that extra mass allows him to stand his ground in the run game.

I expect Porter to be given a chance in the role that Eddie Walls played so well last season. Walls often lined up as either a 3i (on the OG’s outside shoulder) in three-down lineman formations or standing up on the edge outside the tackle. Unlike Walls, Porter will have two seasons to play in Houston.

Oregon had a lot of talent across the defensive front, so I don’t think it’s a lack of ability that kept Porter from seeing the field more regularly. Porter’s best football is ahead of him, and the increase in opportunity will correlate to more production. Working under edges/run-game coordinator James Ross, Porter has a great chance to show what he’s capable of.

If nothing else, the staff’s reaction to signing him says a lot about what kind of player they believe he is. And talent evaluation has been top-notch in the Fritz era.

Making a too-early prediction on what the starting defensive front looks like with the addition of Porter:

DE – Ashton Porter
NT – De’Marion Thomas
DT – Khalil Laufau
Jack – Latreveon McCutchin
