Another gameday the daily. We’re geared up for UH/Tech at AT&T Jones Stadium in Lubbock this afternoon. Donovan Smith returns home – how will that go? We’ll discuss this evening. Today, though, some nuggets for UH’s first daytime game of the season.

Not A Good List. Virginia Tech, UCF, Iowa State, BYU, Oklahoma State, and Houston are the only schools that have been held to 21 or fewer by a G5 school. Five of those are Big 12 teams. Eek. Texas Tech is added to that list if you count just the regulation score (it was 20-20 at Wyoming before a 35-33 Double OT loss).
UH, Baylor, Iowa State, and WVU have all been held to 21 or fewer twice in the first four weeks.
Dana’s Low/High Games. Since coming to Houston, Dana has been held to 21 points or fewer eight times (including twice this season). It’s ten if you count last year’s Tech and Tulane games, where it went into OT tied at 21.
Counting Tech/Tulane, UH is 2-8 when scoring under 20 points. UH needs their first offensive Big 12 touchdown, and then they need to score more than 21 today. Then we can start talking about a win.
In 4+ years, Dana’s teams have scored 40 or more 16 times (13-3 record). They’ve scored 50 or more three times: Twice against USF and last year’s loss to SMU.
Want To See. UH is last in the Big 12 this season in missed tackles. They are last in fourth-down conversions in the Big 12. Nationally, Houston is T-19 in attempts but 124th in conversions percentage. To win in Lubbock, missed tackles must be limited, and fourth-down attempts must be converted. Add not turning it over. If UH turns it over twice, winning will be pretty much impossible.
Another thing I believe is crucial: Sam Brown, Matt Golden, and Joseph Manjack IV account for 85% of UH’s receiving yards. They need to get more guys involved. Stacy Sneed is getting more opportunities out wide, and Josh Cobbs/Stephon Johnson should be to the point where they can contribute.
I’d also like to see Parker Jenkins utilized more in the passing game. He’s caught two balls, but he should be getting more than that each game.
After Thoughts. Home games for us tonight (both at home) so we’ll get going right after the game ends for our new (and improving!) postgame show called After Thoughts. Join us!
