the daily: The AP Poll and an innocent mistake

The AP Poll came out Monday, and Houston was ranked #7. The Cougars are ranked in the preseason for the fourth straight year. A new AP voter, Chandler Mack, ranked Houston #2, and seven others had the Coogs in their top five.

But one voter left UH off her ballot completely: Donna Ditota, a basketball writer at the Syracuse Post-Standard. Curious, I reached out to her to discuss the ballot.

“Oversight,” she wrote in a direct message. “I wish I had a better explanation, but I don’t.”

Ditota said she emailed the ballot to the AP a few weeks ago before going on vacation.

“I mean, I have great respect for that program…I can’t really explain it. My mistake.

“I’ll correct it on the next ballot.”

Ditota had UH ranked #3 to end last season and fourth in the 2022-23 preseason. She had Houston at or better than its actual ranking in 15 weeks in 22-23. It’s pretty clear that it was an innocent mistake.

Other Hoops Notes. Kelvin Sampson and Jamal Shead will travel to Kansas City for Big 12 Media Day on Wednesday morning. They’ll participate in the afternoon session and return home.

The team heads to Oxford this weekend for their ‘super secret’ scrimmage against Ole Miss. Rebels coach Chris Beard and Sampson are friends and usually play a scrimmage against one another. Then, they’ll return and prepare for the season-opening scrimmage against Sampson’s alma mater, UNC Pembroke.

Monday Presser. In the first two Big 12 games, Dana Holgorsen claimed that his team was worn down in the second half. I asked him why they did not get worn down against WVU:

He also discussed WVU’s final drive that resulted in a 4th and 10, 50-yard touchdown with 12 seconds to play.
