Yesterday was the two-year anniversary of Houston’s loss at TCU, dropping its record to 1-2 in Big 12 play in the school’s first year in the league.
1-2.
Everything people said about UH online was right! They didn’t belong. Welcome to the big leagues. This ain’t the American anymore. Buncha losers.
But then…
The Houston Cougars started winning. And winning. And more winning. UH has gone through the last 39 games in the Big 12 at 37-2. A 13-point loss in UH’s first trip to Allen Fieldhouse since 1984 and a one-point OT loss at home to Texas Tech are the only losses.
In the last three years, league records of the top teams in the Big 12:
| Team | Record |
|---|---|
| Houston | 38-4 |
| Iowa State | 29-13 |
| Texas Tech | 28-13 |
| BYU | 27-14 |
| Kansas | 23-19 |
| Baylor | 22-20 |
| Arizona | 17-6* |
*Two seasons
Since losing at Kansas in early February 2024, UH has won 16 consecutive road games. That’s a school record. That’s a Big 12 record. It’s the longest streak in the country.
In the last two-plus years, UH has won Big 12 games at:
Arizona
Arizona State
Baylor (3)
BYU
Cincinnati (2)
Colorado
Kansas
Kansas State
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
UCF (2)
Texas
Texas Tech
WVU
Over the last three years, only three teams have a winning road record. None is close to Houston:
| Team | Record |
|---|---|
| Houston | 18-3 |
| Texas Tech | 13-8 |
| BYU | 11-10 |
| Iowa State | 10-11 |
| Baylor | 8-13 |
| Kansas | 6-15 |
| Arizona | 8-4* |
*Two seasons
To give some perspective, it took from February 5, 1994, until January 21, 2004, to win 18 conference road games across the SWC and C-USA. Two weeks short of a decade. The first of those 18 was Alvin Brooks’ first road win and #18 was Ray McCallum’s last road win. It took three head coaches and 11 seasons to win 18 road conference games. Kelvin Sampson did it in less than two calendar years.
This is the 30th season of Big 12 basketball, and Kansas is 385-105 (78.6%) with 20 regular-season titles. That’s incredible. But at 38-4 (90.5%) and two regular-season titles, Kelvin Sampson isn’t respecting old arrangements. He’s won six out of the last 7 conference titles he’s played for, and he’s once again in the hunt.
