Thursday morning, former Texas guard Chendall Weaver announced he had committed to Kelvin Sampson and the Houston Cougars. The Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte confirmed the news. Weaver is an athletic and electric guard who is perfectly suited for the UH program.
Strengths
- On-ball defense. Weaver can take away the opponent’s best guard. He does an excellent job of getting the ball out of their hands or forcing tough shots without fouling.
- Getting to the paint on offense. Chendall is SUPER athletic. He does a great job putting his head down and getting to the rim to score. Weaver has a nice floater in the paint. He is an EXCELLENT back-door cutter and dunker when his defender is distracted and “ball-watching.”
- Transition offense. Chandell is great in transition offense with or without the ball. He loves to run and find open spots, including rim-running and looking for lobs. He can also lead the fast-break with the ball and does a nice job of driving to the basket until the defense turns him away.
- Offensive rebounding. Weaver is an outstanding offensive rebounding guard. The best teams Coach Sampson has had have had guards that hit the glass on both ends. It should be a match made in Heaven.
- Great teammate. He was at UT for three seasons and only started 17 games. He could have transferred earlier, but was consistently their 6th man and brought immense energy off the bench. His teammates always seemed to love him.
Issues
- Outside shooting. Chendall is not a good three-point shooter. He was 10-46 from beyond the arc last season (22%), but to his credit, he knows he’s not a great shooter. He attempted 169 field goals in 2025-26, and only 46 of them were three-pointers. He was a decent free-throw shooter at 71%.
- Missed Summer. Weaver missed the summer with the Coogs and must learn the defensive system in the next two months. The good news is that he’s a 5th year guy, so the speed of the game will not affect him. He should be able to quickly catch on and be a massive addition to this already solid roster.

Assuming he is and will remain eligible, this should be a picture-perfect pickup for Coach Sampson and the Coogs. Some of the biggest names in the game are praising this late-summer add for UH, and I look forward to learning about his growth in the system. Although I don’t love the current state of the NCAA with adding guys this late, I can’t blame the Coogs for being prepared if recent injunctions stand.
