On our special Talkin’ Bout Them Cougars on Sunday, Kellen Sampson said that much of the credit for freshman big man Ced Lath’s growth should go to Hollis Price. So GoCoogs.com decided to talk to Hollis about Lath’s maturity on the court.
Hollis said that the process has been great. The big man from the Ivory Coast was enthusiastic and wanted to get better, but it took a lot of work.
I asked a few other players about Ced’s development. J’Wan Roberts told me Tuesday that Lath fully understands his role and is starting to play more confidently. J’Wan tells Lath he will get chances to score will come off putbacks and tips. Roberts said Ced needs to get in game shape, which can’t be simulated in practice.
In the interview below, Hollis credits Ryan Elvin for helping Ced off the floor. Elvin said he talks with Lath about being patient and has spent time all year talking about putting in the work even when you don’t have a realistic chance to play. But the circumstances changed, and Lath is often times the first guy off the bench.
Ryan also helps Lath understand Kelvin’s humor and not take it personally. The two bonded on the bench, and Ryan is a calming influence on him.
The video below was shot on Tuesday when UH Basketball had dozens of donors at practice inside the Guy V. Lewis Development Facility. There wasn’t much room to practice or do interviews. We went into another gym to film the interview, but players came to do their post-practice shooting there. It’s hard to hear at times, and we apologize for that.
