Late last week, GoCoogs had the chance to go one-on-one with Houston point guard Jamal Shead. Jamal is in his third year as the starting point guard and has grown into an on-court general. Kellen Sampson calls Shead the tip of the spear: he’s the start of the attack and the deadly force.
UH started recruiting Jamal in his freshman season of high school and fully committed to recruiting him at the end of his junior year. Like most players, Jamal did not know how to practice when he got to Houston. “Until you learn to practice hard, we can’t help you,” Kellen Sampson had said repeatedly.
Jamal shared the backcourt with a first-round pick for two seasons and now has L.J. Cryer next to him. We asked Jamal about his relationship with Cryer, what he’s learned from him and his time at UH, and about the player he sees improving the most.
This interview was in the Guy V. Lewis practice gym with players on the floor, which was a little noisy.
