J’Wan Roberts on the mental part of basketball

J’Wan Roberts is one of the most compelling guys who have played for Kelvin Sampson at UH. He’s thoughtful, funny, and probably the most dependable guy on the roster. J’Wan has been fantastic with GoCoogs, always having time for us and willing to jump from joking around to talking trash to answering questions in fascinating ways.

Tonight, Houston plays at Xavier in the school’s first shot in The Big East–Big 12 Battle. Yesterday, the Big East went 2-0 as Butler beat Texas Tech in overtime, and Creighton won at Oklahoma State. Tonight, four more games, including UH/Xavier and a top-five matchup of UConn at Kansas.

After practice Wednesday, GoCoogs sat down with J’Wan for a one-on-one interview on the second floor of the Guy V. Lewis Development Facility. We chose to talk in front of the Jordan Wall, a new part of the renovated facility that displays Jordans that players wear in games, practice, and their day-to-day. Another part of the display is an exhibit of Jordans from different eras.

J’Wan talked about the mental side of making free throws, how he overcomes doubt, the importance of confidence, Mylik Wilson’s shot, JoJo Tugler, and more.
