Kelvin Sampson on Iowa State and evaluating UH on film

AMES, IA – The Houston Cougars moved to #2 in Monday’s AP and Coaches polls. They face a solid Iowa State team tonight at the sold-out Hilton Coliseum. Kelvin Sampson is 9-6 vs. Iowa State, 3-4 at Hilton Coliseum.

It’s Houston’s first game against the Cyclones since 2010, when another Kelvin – Kelvin Lewis – played 35 minutes, scored 15, and had nine rebounds. Aubrey Coleman went for 28 and nine, but UH lost the game in double-OT in Tom Penders’ last season. An era of big, big shorts:

UH has to be very good in transition defense tonight. Their best player, point guard Tamin Lipsey is the team leader in FG attempts, and 1/3 of those come in transition. The other starting guard, Keshon Gilbert, takes 35% of his shots in transition. As a team, they’re 30/68 from three in transition.

Starns Leland and I had a chance to talk to Kelvin Sampson on Sunday. We decided to start with Iowa State, but we asked other questions because the team had only had the morning to get into the Cyclones. Some are different than what you’d get from a typical media availability.
