Video: Daikiel Shorts discusses the Hail Mary and his receivers

Shorts' WR unit has progressed throughout the season

You can’t help but like Daikiel Shorts Jr., Houston’s WR coach. He’s likable, talks passionately about his receivers, and the production of his unit has been excellent. Shorts is going places – he could be the next to move up into an OC role. Today’s UH Football content is presented by Stewart J. Guss Injury Lawyers – the official injury law firm of UH Athletics.

Shorts is in his third year as WR coach, and so far, he’s molded Tank Dell into a legit NFL presence after two fantastic years at UH. His unit was fifth in receiving touchdowns last year and first in receiving touchdowns per game nationally in 2022. He recruited Matthew Golden from Klein Cain and Stephon ‘Boogie’ Johnson out of the portal. He also took a chance on a short walk-on from College Station named Dalton Carnes, helping to mold him into a solid contributor.

Coming out of HS in Maryland, Shorts had some decent offers – Maryland, Boston College, Boise State, and NC State – but he chose to go with recruiter Shannon Dawson and WVU. After a four-year career at West Virginia and a year on the Bills practice squad, he returned to Morgantown and became a program assistant under Dana.

He came to UH with Dana Holgorsen as Director of Player Personnel before taking over as WR coach when Tyron Carrier departed.

On Tuesday, we had the chance to sit with Shorts and ask questions. The media doesn’t get much opportunity with him, which is a shame – because he’s a great talker. He told us that Matthew Golden practiced Monday and that his star receiver “is good.” Here’s the best from our chat:
