UH beat UTEP Thursday night at Fertitta Center 77-57.
In a 20-point blowout win, the Cougars went on several runs throughout the game. After a slow start, UH hit 7 of 8 shots to build the early lead to 14. The Cougars went cold again and the Miners rallied to within 3.
Coach Sampson inserted Dejon Jarreau back into the lineup and the Cougars hit all four shots before the half to increase the lead to 10. Jarreau had assists on two of them – his 9 assists were a career-high.
In the second half, the lead grew to 14 before UTEP made a run of their own. But after making a short jumper to get within 5, UTEP player Souley Boum was hit with a technical foul. The Cougars responded with a 16-0 run to ice the game.
After getting just 17 points from the starters in the Oklahoma State game on Sunday, Thursday’s starters combined to hit 21 shots (and score 57 points). Nate Hinton and Caleb Mills each had 17 points and Brison Gresham had the most complete game of his career: 10 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 blocked shots.
UH flies to Honolulu today for the Diamond Head Classic.
