The Houston Cougars are on the verge of earning their spot in the American Athletic Conference championship game. Currently, UH is atop the AAC standings at 5-0.
Houston could clinch a berth in the title game with a win today over USF and losses by both SMU and UCF. The Mustangs play at Memphis at 11 a.m. and UCF hosts Tulane at 3. Both games are on ESPNU.
If all three scenarios do not play out, UH could clinch next Saturday if they win today and next week at Temple. That would put the Cougars at 7-0 in the conference and assure that the worst they could do is tie with SMU at 7-1 (UH holds the tie-breaker). UCF visits SMU next Saturday at 11 a.m., playing at the same time as UH.
The Cougars are also still in play to host the AAC title game. Houston will likely need to go undefeated in the conference and hope for a Cincinnati loss. If the two teams tie, the program that is higher in the College Football Playoff Rankings would host. That would almost assuredly be the Bearcats.
UH will finish its conference schedule on Friday, November 19th, a day before Cincinnati plays SMU. The Bearcats and Mustangs will each have conference games on Thanksgiving weekend as well while the Coogs will be out of conference at UConn.
