Workouts Resume For The Cougars

It appears things are back on again for Cougar Football.

UH athletes began coming back to campus on June 1st after the pause in activities related to the COVID-19 virus. That forward motion was stopped as the administration acknowledged six positive cases of the virus and suspended workouts, becoming the first FBS school to do so.

After the first six positive cases, further testing revealed that at least 10 more cases were discovered among the UH athletes back on campus, including football starters.

Last week, word began filtering out that football student-athletes would be heading back to campus once again. New players have moved in and the team was briefed with a new plan for the preseason on Monday. They were told that voluntary workouts would begin on July 9th (Thursday) and mandatory workouts are set to begin Monday, July 13.

With just eight weeks until the opener, UH is moving ahead with plans for the 2020 season. In a Monday op-ed, two UH professors looking to make waves suggested that the Coogs cancel the 2020 season. According to a source, that idea was met with eye-rolls in the Athletics Department.

Every indication is that teams in the American are planning to play the season as originally scheduled but that could change at a moment’s notice (Navy has already had a game canceled). It would be surprising, in my opinion, if most schools were able to play the full 12 games they currently have scheduled. Some might make last-minute substitutions with more regional schools if games are canceled.

I also expect that smaller bowls – some contracted with the AAC – will be canceled as well.
