Houston’s tumble in the AP is dumb but not surprising

The Cougars took a tumble in the AP Poll this week – dropping from 5th to 11th after a one-point loss at Tulsa on Tuesday night. Moving down is hardly surprising but other top-10 teams that lost were treated differently.

After a 25-point home loss, their second loss of the year, Kansas dropped just three spots to 6th. WVU had two losses over two weeks and only fell seven spots total (7 to 14th). Houston’s convincing 14-point road win at previously-undefeated SMU did not do much to sway voters, it seems.

Jeff Call of the Deseret News plunged the Coogs from 5th to 15th while only nudging Kansas from 3rd to 6th. Jeff Borzello of ESPN dropped the Coogs 8 spots but thought Kansas should fall only two. Steve Hewitt of the Boston Herald pushed Houston from 6 to 13 but love-tapped the Jayhawks, moving them from 3rd to 4th. Shannon Ryan of the Chicago Tribune popped the Coogs from 7th to 20th while moving Kansas down just three spots.

Zach Klein from WSB in Atlanta jilted the Cougars, moving them from 4th to 14th but voted Kansas 3rd – the same as he did the week before. In all, 10 voters moved the Cougars down 8 spots or more.

John Feinstein did not vote.
