Houston added a legitimate talent to Shawn Bell’s quarterback room when 2027 Cy Ranch talent Braden Baker committed late last week.
Baker just completed his first season as a full-time starter for Cy Ranch, leading his team to a district championship and a couple of playoff wins. He threw for 35 touchdowns and only one interception in 2025, an outstanding ratio, even more so when you consider the context and the type of throws he is making.
What Houston is Getting
When I scouted him, it was easy to see that Baker’s best asset is his deep ball. Baker’s arm allows his playcaller flexibility to call anything on the field.
He can stretch the field vertically with his arm, and he doesn’t need a clean pocket to do it. The touch and timing of his throws give his receivers a chance to make plays and catch the ball on the run.
He also attacks the intermediate area of the field, turning up the velocity to fit in a tight window when needed.
Baker’s athleticism shows up when he gets outside the pocket. He can throw from multiple arm angles and on the move. Like Weigman, he’s a good athlete who shouldn’t be overlooked as a runner. His feet will add another dimension to the offense.
Sunday night on Talkin’ Bout Them Cougars, I asked Baker about using his legs.
What his coaches say
“I think it’s a match made in heaven,” Cy Ranch offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Sam Scott told me in an interview for Recruiting+.
Scott is a UH alum himself and has now coached Texas high school football for the past 12 years. He’s coached some talented players, including TCU running back Jeremy Payne and Texas Tech wide receiver Caleb Douglas, while at Hightower. Douglas just participated in the NFL Combine and will likely be drafted soon.
Coach Scott has high praise for his Baker, stating that he’s not only the best quarterback he’s coached but “the best football player.” Scott said that Baker’s ability allows Cy Ranch to install and utilize anything in the playbook. Not only is Baker physically capable, but he also has the mental capacity to handle whatever he is given.
“This kid is gonna play on Sundays,” said Scott.
Baker’s older brother, Blake, is a quarterback at Louisiana Tech and holds many passing records at Cy Ranch. Scott mentioned that Blake has been a good mentor for Braden as he goes through the recruiting process. He also believes that Braden will own the Cy Ranch passing records when his high school career ends.
The Coogs continue to roll on the recruiting trail. They have made the Houston area a priority, and Baker is the latest example. The future at quarterback is in good hands.
