Recruiting spotlight: Houston commit Cael Thigpen

Last weekend, Willie Fritz improved his 2027 class with the commitment of Jersey Village edge Cael Thigpen.

Why stay in Houston?

Thigpen echoed what other commits and recruits targeted by Houston are saying. “I love the coaches here,” he said in an interview with Recruiting+. Specifically, he stated that his future position coach, James Ross, “is a great dude.” Considering the quick decision to commit less than two weeks after initially being offered, it’s clear the coaching staff made an impression on him.

He has an official visit scheduled with the Coogs at the beginning of June with other UH priority recruits. But, rather than extend the process, Thigpen decided to lock in with Houston. Having experienced position meetings and several practices, he had seen enough. And those experiences felt more authentic to him than anything he’d see with a group of recruits on an official visit.

Thigpen is thoughtful when he talks, and there is clear intentionality in what he says. Intentionality is what stuck with him about Willie Fritz and his staff. Houston’s approach to practice, especially Coach Fritz, sold Thigpen. Cael watched Fritz keep his eye on everything and everyone, even while critiquing players on the microphone.

Why Houston chose him

If you’ve had the chance to see Thigpen in person, it’s clear what drew the staff to him. His frame, length, and quickness are ideal for the JACK position. Speaking of intent, when watching Thigpen on film, he has a knack for poking the ball out. He emphasizes striking down to knock the ball loose while wrapping up.

In his highlight film, you can see him handling heavier players and setting the edge. As he develops and matures physically, he will be more disruptive in the run game. Watching him pass rush in 1-on-1s next to fellow Coog commit Raiden Cook at the Rivals Camp was where he really caught my eye.

Thigpen has quickness and lateral agility that he pairs well with developing technique. He uses his hands well to displace blockers and flashes solid bend to dip around the edge. Thigpen plans to report in January for the spring semester; I could see him pushing for playing time, as Chance Bryant did this past season.

The Coogs add another Houston-area recruit to the class. That makes four now, with CE King’s Braylon Lane committing on March 31, as well as Raiden Cook and Mo Poko. A strong start to the 2027 class, and there could be more commitment news coming soon.
