Conner Weigman had a sneaky good first game

Conner Weigman made throws Saturday that we did not see him make last year. We also saw receivers make borderline ridiculous plays. Koby Young caught an early-game bomb with a defender interfering – the play he didn’t make last year. That was big for him. Amare had two circus catches. And Trent Walker made a great play on the pass thrown by Keisean Henderson (out of bounds) and an even better one on the two-point attempt (which was negated by penalty).

There is a stat that PFF has that I particularly like for quarterbacks: Adjusted Completion Percentage (ADJ%), which is “the % of aimed passes thrown on target (completions + drops / aimed).” In a sense, what percentage of the time does the QB do his job? But ADJ% does not take into account the distance of throws. A QB could have a great ADJ if their throws went less than a yard down the field (Akron’s QB below).

So I looked at this week’s QBs to compare. This is everyone with at least 25 attempts and who faced an FBS opponent.

Conner is in the top handful of performances this week.

Last year, Conner had 5 games with 30+ pass attempts. He had 30 in the Oregon State game, and his average depth of target was 10.6 yards (the distance the ball traveled in the air).

Conner Weigman passing yards by quarter against Oregon State last year: 4, 90, 3, 160, 12 (OT).
Conner Weigman passing yards by quarter against Oregon State this year: 108, 36, 39, 122.

Conner went 15/23 in the fourth quarter against them in two games – five of those completions went for over 25 yards, and 11 went for over 10.

Conner was 10/12 to the left side of the field against the Beavers for 143 yards, and 4/4 on balls thrown over 10 yards.
