Lack Of Depth In Defensive Backfield Still A Concern
Summer Session I begins on June 3rd and UH coaches are working to get several new transfers into school by that date. One of the players that UH football has zeroed in on is JUCO safety Gervarrius Owens.
Owens signed with Minnesota in February after playing one season for Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (NEO). At NEO, Owens was a JUCO All-American after recording 92 tackles, 3 pass breakups, and 3 INT in 11 games.
Coming out of Southmoore HS in Moore, Oklahoma, Owens committed to and enrolled at Kansas State, where he spent one semester. Owens was then recruited to NEO by current Gophers assistant, and then-NEO Head Coach, Clay Patterson.

As a high school recruit, Owens was offered by Iowa State, Kansas, Purdue, Memphis, and Cincinnati as well as others. Among the others: Houston and Arkansas State.
UH offered him in April of 2016, just three months after the Peach Bowl. Recruited by Derek Warehime, Owens made an unofficial campus visit in July of that year but committed to Memphis less than a week later. He was expected to sign with Memphis but chose Kansas State on signing day.
Cougar defensive coordinator Joe Cauthen and DL coach Brian Early were recruiting Owens for Arkansas State. Early recruited Oklahoma high schools for the Red Wolves and does so for UH. He also recruits NEO for the Coogs.
It is unclear if Owens will be able to make it into school. There are some things in the air in regard to his time at Kansas State, NEO, and signing with Minnesota. Owens played last year as a redshirt freshman and is believed to have three years of eligibility left although that is still being worked out.
24/7 rated him as the #5 JUCO safety in last year’s class.
