UH will play 12 FBS opponents in 2020 for just the second time since FBS moved to a 12-game regular season. The other time was 2012 after Texas State moved up from FCS to FBS. 2017 would have also been 12 FBS opponents but Hurricane Harvey resulted in the cancellation of the UTSA game.

Notes on the first 6 games of the 2020 season (part 2 coming soon):

Rice: This will be the 43rd playing of the Bayou Bucket and just the 3rd time it will be played on a Thursday. The other two:

1983: “The earliest game in SWC history” according to reports at the time. It was a 45-14 win at Rice as Donald Jordan ran for 138 yards and 3 TDs.

2011: Case Keenum threw for 534 yards and 9 TDs in a 73-34 win.

With a win, UH will match their longest winning streak in the series (6 games).

Wazzu: The trip to Washington State will be the school’s first to the Evergreen State since 1984 when the Coogs played Washington in week two.

This will be the first game in the Pacific Time Zone since the 2012 trip to UCLA.

Memphis: The conference opener is on September 19th, the same date UH opened the conference season last year vs. Tulane.

2014 was the last time UH beat Memphis in the Liberty Bowl. It was Greg Ward’s first start.

The Tigers have averaged 46.75 ppg against UH over the last four years.

UNT: UH has scored 44+ in all three games against UNT this decade. The last loss to the Mean Green was in 1975.

The UNT staff has UH flavor: OL coach Mike Bloesch started 37-straight games for the Cougars at guard from 2006-08, Clay Jennings was on the Houston staff in 2005-06 and 2017, Adrian Mayes was director of recruiting in 2015, and director of operations George Matsakis served in the same role during Dana Dimel’s first two seasons.

Tulane: The Green Wave did not beat UH from 2002 until Homecoming 2014. That was the game that sealed Tony Levine’s fate.

The schools are 2-2 against each other since Willie Fritz became Tulane’s coach – each school winning their home games.

In just 23 regular-season meetings, UH has faced Tulane at the Astrodome, the Superdome, Robertson Stadium, Tad Gormley Stadium, Cajun Field, Yulman Stadium, and TDECU Stadium.

BYU: This is the third game against BYU – the other Cougars have won the first two. UH hasn’t beaten another team named the Cougars since 1966 (Washington State).

UH has not beaten a team from Utah since 1981 (Utah State) and has not beaten an FBS independent since 1996 (Southwestern Louisiana).

Of the nine founding MWC members, BYU is the only one that UH has never beaten. The Coogs are 34-17 against the other eight schools.
