Spring practice notes and recruits on hand

Houston Football practiced Saturday morning, their third practice of the Spring. The players get their first day off tomorrow before returning to the weight room on Monday. Willie Fritz brought out officials to help in 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills.

Approximately 25 recruits watched the practice. A few names are below.

There are a few injuries in the program, but nothing appears long-term. Mekhi Mews had a procedure a few weeks ago and is not practicing. Defensive back Maurice Williams did not practice today but did individual drills on the sideline. Also on the sideline working were Steve Polk, who injured his Achilles before the 2024 season, Torren Coppage-El, who is working from an ACL injury suffered in September, and Cedric Melton, who was injured in the last month of the season.

The defense is still ahead of the offense, but that’s to be expected at this point in spring, especially with a new quarterback and OC. That said, WR Dylan Gayton made a nice grab in 7-on-7 but was ruled out by an official (he was in—maybe two feet in).

Corey Platt Jr. was on the field getting reps. He was moving without any limitations and had no issues cutting. DC Austin Armstrong expects him to be a leader on the defense in 2025. Platt has suffered two ACL tears, one in each of his knees, in the past two seasons.

Some video:

DJ Butler looked good returning kicks. Vanderbilt transfer Alvin Williamson nearly grabbed a pick in 7-on-7 but dropped it. Several guys in his position group demanded that he do 100 pushups for the miscue, but Marc Stampley, the Georgia Southern transfer, said he should do a thousand.

Former running back Chandler Smith and several guys who played for Fritz at Tulane program were in attendance.

Most of the recruits that were at practice were 2026 offensive linemen. There was also a commit from another Texas school and a 2028 athlete (neither listed below).
