the daily: golfin’, schedulin’, and countin’

Our daily Cliffsnotes into the fun and interesting happenings at UH. Today: The U.S. Amateur, the 2024 schedule, UTSA dot counting, and the weird things our phones do.

the daily #15 | Archives

The Am. Austyn Reily made five birdies (and five bogeys) in an even-par round of 72 at Colorado Golf Club on Monday. He’s tied for 45th. Nicklaus Sutton was roughed up at Cherry Hills, shooting 78 (+7).

Both Cougars start their second round at 8 a.m. Tuesday. Reily has a legit shot to advance into match play. All he needs is to finish top 64 Big day for him at Cherry Hills. Live scoring is here.

Recent History. Blair Hamilton is the last UH player to make it to match play. In 2016, he tied for 57th with 22 others but made a birdie on the first playoff hole to advance. He won his first match, 4 and 2, but lost in his second match at Oakland Hills Country Club outside Detroit.

Roman Robledo made it to match play and won three matches at Atlanta Athletic Club in 2014. He beat Tour Player Robby Shelton, U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau, and lost to Tour player Denny McCarthy 3 and 2. Robledo is the furthest a Cougar golfer has gone since Andy Sanders made it to the quarterfinals in 2000.

2024. UH has a home game against UNLV scheduled for week one next season, and as GoCoogs first reported, they’ll play OU in week two. Week three was supposed to be Boise State, a postponed game from a few years back. But that series was canceled, which Joseph Duarte first reported.

UH will add an FCS team in that spot on September 21, a program that will almost certainly be from Texas.

The IV. Each day this week, we’re talkin’ bout a player that might surprise some people. Joseph Manjack is going to have a breakout year. That’s not from an insider source – that’s just my opinion. He’s built a relationship with Donovan Smith and has sure hands. The guys in the WR room love him, too.

Now, about those short shorts…

Dot Countin’. There are about 2371 green dots (available seats) left for the UTSA game as of 7 a.m. Tuesday. That does not include seats reserved for the two mini-plans (one of which includes UTSA and the other allows for the option of UTSA). UTSA will likely be a “sellout” on paper, but the juice in the stadium is more important.

TDECU has been a morgue for the last six years. That has to change this year.

Big Minutes. JoJo Tugler got the second-most minutes in Australia among the bigs. He played 20 of the 24 minutes in the red/white scrimmage. Kelvin is getting his feet wet to see how he responds so they know what to work on with him for the next few months.

Portraits of KDS. If you own an iPhone, you can click on your photos app and then the “For You” tab. And from there, the phone makes a slideshow of some of your photos and puts music to them. Yesterday, I clicked my “For You,” and it was called “Portraits.”

For you, maybe it’s a group of photos of your son’s wedding, or your granddaughter, or that trip to Italy or Alaska or Baytown. Here’s what my phone offered me as “portraits:”

Dozens of Kelvin photos and videos on my phone. And that’s why I’m taking a few days away from the UH beat for some R&R before the Big 12 craziness really begins. But we’ll still post the daily each morning.
