When stop really means don’t stop. Or does it?

DL coach Brian Early is high on a guy you’ve barely seen play. Transfer quarterbacks are everywhere – and all over UH’s schedule. And funny stuff from campus before students start moving in.

Zy-KEY-us. Brian Early and numerous players have raved about Zykeius Strong. He redshirted last year (played sparingly in the bowl) but has come on strong in camp. He’s an Alabama HS and a Kansas JUCO kid – both of which this staff loves. 247Sports rated him the top edge rusher coming out of JUCO, and he’s added about 10 pounds of muscle since then.

Early says he’s as physically gifted as Payton Turner and “freaky twitchy,” which is his way of saying he will be a playmaker.

2nd Stop. Or 4th. It seems like half of college football has a transfer at first-string QB. So I started thinking: how many transfer QBs will UH play this year?

UTSA – No. SEVENTH year in the program for Frank Harris. He committed right before his senior year, which, to put it in UH terms, was a couple of months before the Coogs beat OU at NRG in 2016.

Rice – Transfer JT Daniels might still be at Rice in week 2. He’s already been at USC, UGA, and WVU.

TCU – Chandler Morris transferred from OU.

SHSU – Still up in the air, but they’ve all transferred. It could be Grant Gunnell, who went to Arizona, then Memphis, then UNT, and now the Piney Woods. Or it could be Keegan Shoemaker, who started at Lafayette in the Patriot League. Or it could be Jordan Yates, who graduated from Georgia Tech.

Texas Tech – Tyler Shough transferred from Oregon

WVU – No. For the first time in 10 years, the Eers will not start a transfer.

Texas – Quinn Ewers transferred from Ohio State.

Kansas State – No. Will Howard is the KSU QB and enrolled early out of HS.

Baylor – No. Will Shapen went to Baylor out of HS.

Cincinnati – No. Evan Prater was a HS signee.

Oklahoma State – Mike Gundy has not made any decisions on his starting QB. One of his choices: Alan Bowman, who was at Texas Tech, where he threw for about 6,000 yards against UH in 2018. Sorry for the PTSD. Bowman was also at Michigan previously.

UCF – John Rhys Plumlee started his career at Ole Miss but went to Orlando to play for Gus Malzahn.

That’s six of 12 with the possibility of a 7th in OkState. And five of six to start the year. And, of course, UH will start a transfer, too.
