Clayton Tune Is Doubtful For Cinci Game

Unless something has changed since Friday night, QB Clayton Tune will be out of today’s game vs. #25 Cincinnati. He could see some limited action but it is unlikely.

Tune’s injury at UNT was more severe than UH has let on and it has limited him in practice this week. Logan Holgorsen and Bryson Smith have been getting a lot of reps in anticipation of the two playing most, maybe all, of the Cincinnati game.

The situation at QB is pretty dire: Bryson has started all 5 games at WR but he is now in the QB room. With no Tune, and without King (redshirt) and Ogbogu (injury), there are very few options at the most important position on the field. Who is the emergency 3rd string QB? Well, ummm, do you have any eligibility?

It’s too early to know the extent of Tune’s injury – perhaps Dana will open up about it in the postgame. As always, he was coy this week:

I have no idea what to expect from Holgorsen but Bryson Smith intrigues me. He’s another Tyler John Tyler QB wearing #1 – there’s some good vibes in that. Perhaps more importantly, he’s a total unknown to Cincinnati.

Smith threw for 3277 and 32 TDs in his senior year of HS while running for 1653 yards and 23 TDs. Obviously this isn’t East Texas but as we’ve seen in a lot of different spots on the field, he’s a playmaker. Here’s his only collegiate TD pass from last year’s ECU game:

For two years, we’ve been told that Bryson needs to see the field more because of those playmaking abilities. It appears we’ll see that today. When asked last year if he can go from WR to QB, Smith was direct:

“I’m an athlete. I’m able to do it,” Smith said.
