The Houston Football two-deep was released just before Dana Holgorsen’s Monday press conference. Quite a few things to note but here are our first impressions:
Four of the five OL that started the UTSA game last year are back in the same spots for the 2023 opener. Cam’Ron Johnson, who left for Missouri in the spring, is the only loss from last year’s opener.
UH brought in two offensive transfers from WVU – both of whom Dana recruited there – and both will start (Tony Mathis Jr at RB and Mike O’Laughlin at TE). The other two WVU transfers on the roster – Sam Brown and Noah Guzman – will also start.
Some of the backups will be interesting to watch:
Demetrius “Pancake” Hunter is the backup at center. Max Banes, the UH legacy who started college at UH, left for a year at Akron, is the backup at LG. Both spots on the right side are backed up by transfers – the ULM transfer Peyton Dunn at guard and FIU transfer Shamar Hobdy-Lee at tackle. The right side of the OL is a big question mark to start the year.
Stacy Sneed is the listed backup for RB Tony Mathis Jr. But Dana said in his press conference that “Brandon Campbell’s had a good camp” and indicated Campbell could start if he has the best week of practice.
First-year DI transfers back up six spots on offense and two on defense. David Ugwoegbu (OU), Malik Fleming (ECU), and AJ Haulcy (UNM) are first-year FBS transfers who will start the season.
There are no true freshmen on the two-deep.
Only six of 22 offensive/defensive starters were UH recruits out of HS.
