Houston finished off their camp season with a bang after Pearland linebacker Kamryn Harris was offered at the last session and committed just a few days later.
At the moment, Harris is the 13th commit in the 2027 class and the second linebacker, along with Jerrell Bridges. Like Bridges, Harris is originally from Louisiana. It’s not out of the ordinary to meet a Louisiana transplant in Houston, and the “bayou to bayou” connection is alive and well with this class.
Harris mentioned that the staff attended one of Pearland’s spring practices. General manager Wes Fritz invited Harris to camp so the staff could get a better look at him. He impressed defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong as he “dominated” 1-on-1 coverage drills. Prior to camp, Harris was on campus to attend spring practice.
Oklahoma State hosted Harris for his lone official visit to this point. He had good things to say about the Cowboys program, but the opportunity to stay close to home was too important for him. Harris recently visited the Houston facilities for a photoshoot on campus and plans to take an official visit with Houston in September.
Harris on the field
At camp, Harris says he measured at a 78-inch wingspan and 6’2” and 219 lbs. That’s a good frame and build, especially considering he still has another year of high school. It’s no surprise that Coach Armstrong liked what he saw in the coverage drills. Harris’s length, speed, and fluidity show up in how well he covers ground on film.
His athleticism is evident on film. The coaches at Pearland lined him up at the apex, “splitting the defense between the tackle and receiver,” due to his coverage ability and athleticism. Harris really believes in his coverage skills, calling it his “biggest strength.”
Special teams is a place where he shines as well. His HUDL highlight film includes multiple punt blocks. The Pearland staff prioritizes special teams, and that has carried over to Harris. His willingness to perform on special teams could be an opportunity for him to see the field early for the Coogs.
Harris admits that there is a part of his game he hopes to improve, such as aggressiveness in the run game. His ability to cover ground puts him in a position to make plays regularly on ball carriers. But he wants to arrive with more intent and develop a quicker trigger to the ball. (The play at 1:40 in his highlight tape is a good example)
Harris didn’t flat-out say he was “shutting down” his recruitment, but noted that, aside from taking an official visit to Houston, he is “done (with) recruiting right now.” His plan is to report to campus after his senior year, sometime next summer.
