Cougars continue to address their biggest need: corner
Earlier this week, GoCoogs.com first revealed that transfer cornerback Kelvin Clemmons, most recently at the University of Minnesota, was coming to Houston for a visit. On Saturday, he committed to play for the Cougars.
“He’s all in. Visit was great,” a UH staffer told GoCoogs. “He was a good get for us!”
Clemmons enrolled at UM in January and participated in spring drills, finishing with 3 tackles in the Spring Game. After weighing his options, he decided to enter the transfer portal in late April. A Minnesota beat writer speculated that playing time might be the reason for his transfer.
Because he enrolled at Minnesota, Clemmons will have to sit a year but will then have two to play for the Coogs. The UH staffer told me that after getting quality players for 2020 like Clemmons, “people better take their shots at us now.”
Clemmons was a signing day surprise for the Gophers in December after announcing that his decision would come down to USF and Kentucky. Minnesota had offered him in May 2018 but he remained coy about his interest until signing his LOI.
Clemmons last played at Hutchinson CC in Kansas. In 2018, he had 34 tackles, 15 pass breakups, 3 TFLs and an INT. 24/7 rated him as the #9 JUCO CB in 2018 and he also had offers from, among others, Maryland and FAU as well as AAC teams USF and SMU.
The Tampa native describes himself as a confident player on the field that loves to trash-talk receivers. Even though he’s 6’2″ and just over 200 lbs, he says he can move like a quick 5’9″ corner.
UH will sign Clemmons as soon as he’s eligible. Because final exams at Minnesota continue through Wednesday, his transcripts are not currently available.
