Recruiting spotlight: UH commit Marcus Watson Jr

Marcus Watson Jr., a 6’1″ athlete in the class of 2027 from Central High School near Baton Rouge, is Houston’s only commitment out of six from outside of Texas.

Why Houston?

The staff has done well with regard to recruiting, evidenced by the current class. But a few names have come up regularly: general manager Wes Fritz, wide receiver coach Brian Bell, and director of recruiting Jay Girdner. Watson mentioned them regarding the relationships he’s built with the program.

He focused on the bond he has created with Bell, as several of the commits have said to this point. Watson has seen his future coach now in multiple settings. He has been able to sit in on position meetings, watch him at practice, and through their own personal interactions. And he says that through all of that, “I’ve never seen Coach Bell negative.”

Watson mentioned that he is very close to current UH player DK Mays. The two were teammates at Central, and he said he looked to Mays for guidance regarding Houston. Watson said that Mays was one of his leaders early in his high school career.

What Watson will bring to Houston

Length is something that immediately stands out with Watson. He’s listed at 6’1 and has a lean frame that he uses to his advantage. Whether he’s playing CB or WR, he attacks the ball and gets to it first. His concentration near the sidelines, paired with his length, makes for some impressive catches.

Watson has versatility as a route runner. Any wide receiver prospect will tell you that they can line up anywhere or run any route, but Watson demonstrates it on his highlight tape. The offense asks him to create on screens, stretch the field over the top, and run the intermediate routes over the middle of the field. And he doesn’t shy away from making plays in traffic.

He has fluidity to get in and out of breaks as well. After the catch, Watson turns on the speed, but you also see him slip tackles in short-area situations. He’ll run through contact if a defender doesn’t square up. GoCoogs publisher Ryan Monceaux mentioned on Talkin’ Bout Them Cougars on Sunday that Louisiana wide receivers are tough, and Watson’s run-blocking clips prove it.

Watson does play defense, but I think his future will be on offense. Either way, the Coogs have added another athlete who gives them some flexibility.

He plans to be on campus in the spring of 2027.
