Introducing ‘the daily’ – our new daily UH journal

Today we introduce our new feature, the daily. Every day through the end of UH’s basketball season, we’ll publish a short, diary-like update; a little nugget of information or two that doesn’t quite equal a complete article. It will largely be football for the next few months, then transition to basketball. We’ll make this appointment reading for serious UH fans.

A big thanks to our friends at Stewart J. Guss Injury Lawyers, the official personal injury law firm for University of Houston Athletics, for helping make this possible. Trust Guss!

Football. Earlier today GoCoogs wrote about what we know about this 2023 UH football team. Heartland Sports, which covers the Big 12, put out lists that rank league members by position groups. Here’s how the four newcomers fared:

UHBYUUCUCF
QB139125
OL106149
RB137149
WR98145
DL6815
LB149107
DB14131011
ST11834

They have a newcomer ranked 13th or 14th in every position group except DL and special teams. Perhaps the recruiting difference in P5/G5 is that much, but it’s odd that defensive line would be an outlier. That said, edge rushers (bandits, in UH vernacular) like D’Anthony Jones and Payton Turner are evening the playing field. Versatile guys that can stand up, put their hand in the dirt, or blitz inside or outside are giving defenses more options at the point of attack.

Nelson Ceaser will continue getting a ton of snaps outside the tackle. Brian Early absolutely loves him.

Dana Holgorsen will meet with the media at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, and then we’ll observe the first 30 minutes of practice. We won’t learn anything from it, but it’s fun to see the guys starting fall camp.

Basketball. Tonight’s scrimmage will be the first time fans get to see Damian Dunn or LJ Cryer in a UH uniform and the talented freshmen group. GoCoogs will record with Galen Robinson tonight to get his impressions of the newcomers and the newer, thicker Jamal Shead.
