Defensive changes and Longhorn Band drama

On Monday, Dana Holgorsen credited his defensive coaches for the move to a 3-3 front against Texas. He says film study showed them what had previously given UT problems.

The 3-3. Players embraced the change, Holgorsen said. Many of them benefitted, including David Ugwoegbu, who had his best game as a Cougar. Ugwoegbu transferred to UH to play on the DL but played a majority of his snaps against Texas off the line. According to PFF, he had five stops (tackles that constitute a “failure” for the offense), tying his career high. Note: Ugwoegbu only played about 35 snaps.

“There’s a reason why a lot of teams have went to it in this league,” Holgorsen said of the 3-3 defense. He mentioned that two upcoming opponents, Kansas State and Oklahoma State, run a 3-3.

“We made ’em kind of earn it,” he said. “And we slowed them down. It was successful, and I was proud of our players and our coaches on how they embraced this, you know, and how we tackled.”

Dana said that while UH will probably experiment in the future with what they run, he’s not ready to announce a permanent change.

“I think it’s something that we can build on. I’m not going to give away secrets on what we’re going to continue to do moving forward, but I do think it’s something that we can build on.”

The Drama Queens. Did you see some stuff online about the Longhorn Band this weekend? Sounded like UH did them dirty, right?

But you know what you don’t see? Blaming Houston. Why?

Because UH does not assign band seats, just like Texas does not assign band seats. Schools get an allotment of seats and disperse them as they see fit.

Isn’t it weird that these issues don’t come up with other schools? Just this one. UT knows how this works. Their own out-of-conference contracts say it:

They should have set them aside if they wanted 500 or 600 tickets for the band. How can they not figure that out?

UH handled this well, choosing not to go tit for tat.

Needs Help. Kevin Sumlin was arrested for DUI this weekend in Tampa. The former UH head coach, who left for Texas A&M and then went to Arizona, is in his first year at Maryland as co-OC.

It was well-known that Sumlin struggled with alcohol issues during his time at UH and A&M. Well-sourced Arizona insider Jason Scheer says it was out in the open there, too.
