#11 Coogs beat #9 Arkansas in 1978

Danny Davis rallied the Houston Cougars with three touchdown drives to overcome #9 Arkansas, 20-9. Randy Love scored two touchdowns as UH kept pace with Texas atop the Southwest Conference standings.

Arkansas had 186 yards of offense in the first quarter but only had six points to show for it, as the UH defense forced two field goal attempts. Arkansas ran 21 times for 104 yards in that first quarter, but the Mad Dogs dominated the rest of the game, allowing only 45 more yards on the ground (on 22 attempts).

“Anytime you shut down that gang with no touchdowns, you’ve done real well,” coach Bill Yeoman said. “It was a super-great job by the defensive coaches and the kids.”

The Razorback win was UH’s sixth, half of which came against top-10 teams. Houston jumped into the AP Top 10 and stayed there for 18 of the next 20 weeks.

“We played hard but lost to a better football team tonight,” Arkansas coach Lou Holtz said. “Everywhere we turned was a dead alley.”

Emmett King ran for 123 yards.
