Today, in 1988, Houston defeated #10 Wyoming 34-10 in the Astrodome. The Cougars sacked Cowboy quarterbacks 16 times, with Glenn Montgomery accounting for six. Both are school records.
Heading into the game, Houston lost eight straight games against top-25 teams, going back to 1984. But the Cougars made this a no-doubter: Wyoming had 17 possessions, and 12 included a sack or ended in a turnover. The Pokes finished with -37 yards rushing on 39 attempts.
“The pressure on their quarterback by our defensive line was the key to it all,” UH coach Jack Pardee said. After the game, Pardee accepted a bid to the Aloha Bowl.
Houston kicked four field goals in the game, largely due to a 2/14 day on third down.
Keith Jenkins, Alfred Oglesby, and Reggie Burnette each had three sacks. The official NCAA record for sacks in a game is 15, but records only go back to the year 2000. Montgomery’s six sacks would be tied for 3rd all-time if the game occurred in the 21st century.
UH jumped to #17 in the top-20 the following week.
