Note: Zeke Riser was a defensive lineman for UH from 2009-2012. He will be featured on GoCoogs this season as an analyst helping to break down the defense – with a focus on UH’s new four-man front.
What do you think about Joe Cauthen’s four-man front in today’s game?
Cauthen’s four-man front may not be the sexiest in terms of a 2019 defense (most are dominated by odd-numbered fronts), but it answers a lot of questions that the Cougars have for this season.
Traditionally, a four-man front has a concentration on stopping the run. This even front also allows for more inside pressure against the passing game. With the departure of Ed Oliver, having two bodies inside to apply pressure could be a good thing. With how Cauthen’s teams have played in the past, there should be no shortage of pressure on the quarterback.
Playing in the offense’s backfield will be a large area of emphasis. Expect familiar names like Aymiel Fleming and Isaiah Chambers to lead this group. An inside and an outside guy. Two names that have shown up before.
What is it about those two guys that you like?
