Houston sunk Navy in the 1980 Garden State Bowl

Forty-five years ago today, Houston beat Navy in the 1980 Garden State Bowl, 35-0, at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. In his final game at UH, Terald Clark ran for 163 yards and three touchdowns and was named the game’s MVP.

Houston ran the ball 78 times for 405 yards and five touchdowns while forcing the Midshipmen to throw 25 times, completing only seven. The 35 points were just short of the season high as the Cougars averaged just under 20 ppg.

The Cougars completed the 1980 season 7-5 and 5-3 in the SWC, finishing second. The Garden State Bowl was UH’s eighth bowl in 12 seasons, dating back to 1969, and Houston’s 14th winning season in 15.
