Akeem blocks 16 shots in a game

On December 3, 1983, Akeem Olajuwon blocked 16 shots against Biscayne at Hofheinz, setting a school record. Olajuwon had a triple-double that day: 10 points, 18 rebounds, and 16 blocks in the 69-51 win. He blocked 24% of Biscayne’s attempts.

The 16 blocks would tie the current NCAA record (set in 2007), but blocked shots were not officially kept until 1985-86. Akeem’s 207 blocks in the 1983-84 season would also tie David Robinson’s NCAA record.

Benny Anders scored 19 points, and Michael Young had 18. Anders and Young each had seven rebounds.

UH held Biscayne to 19/67 (28.4%) shooting that day, but Coach Guy V. Lewis was not pleased with the defense shown by the first team. He subbed all five guys just five minutes into the game.
