UH Athletics Has a Communications Problem

RANT: It’s hard for UH to draw attention to ourselves. We live in a market where the local media are obsessed with pro sports. So it’s important that our fans, and especially our communications (formerly SID) staff, gets basic information correct. An example:

Men’s basketball is ranked for the first time since 2005. That’s 12 years. But you wouldn’t know it reading UHCougars.com today.

That’s not a typo – that’s just not knowing our history. Or not looking it up. While we were only ranked 1 week in 2005, we were still ranked!

UH ranked

Our current ranking is the first time we’ve been ranked in both polls in 30 years. But that’s not what the release says. I think it’s reasonable to expect us to promote facts – especially when they make us look a little better.

Once you click into the release, it’s not even for today’s game. It’s for last week’s game vs. Temple.  The release says UH is winners of 5 of their last 6 – except we’ve won 6 of our last 7 and 5 in a row. It’s a bad cut and paste job: somehow we got the location and the info graphic correct but not, you know, all those pesky words.

Thankfully, we were able to tweet the right info today:

When you have a coach busting his tail and getting it done for his school and his city, is it too much to ask that we promote his program accurately? When you have players putting in tremendous effort, playing great defense and dominating the boards, is it too much to ask for the communications department get basic info right?

All of it reflects poorly on UH and the program when easy things are done haphazardly. Ranked for the first time in a long while and we can’t even get decent promotion for those that are taking a look at us for the first time in years.

P.S. UH, ranked for the first time since 2005, plays Memphis tonight at 8 p.m. Central on CBS Sports Net. Please Watch!
