On October 14, 1950, Houston beat Louisville 27-7 at Public School Stadium. Junior Bobby Rogers was inserted at QB and scored twice to propel the Cougars. The Houston Post described his second touchdown as a “beautiful but unusual 62-yard run.” Rogers finished with 116 yards on 11 carries.
Max Clark scored a touchdown and kicked three extra points. Clark, often called “Little Max Clark” in media accounts, was a 155-pound halfback who called signals and stole the hearts of UH students and fans. The Houstonian Yearbook named him the 1950 Football Player of the Year. Clark was the nation’s seventh-leading scorer and played 87% of UH’s plays, both on offense and defense. He was also the first Cougar to be selected in the NFL Draft (1951).
Gene Shannon scored UH’s other touchdown. Shannon was one of three Cougars to be inducted into the Hall of Honor in its first year, joining Rex Baxter and Guy V. Lewis.
The teams combined for 198 yards in penalties, with Louisville accounting for the majority (123 yards).
