Recruiting+ Spotlight: UH commit Josiah Morgan

Receiver coach Brian Bell continues his hot streak, and Saturday, he added another Louisiana pass catcher in Ruston’s Josiah Morgan. I spoke to Morgan Saturday night.

Why Houston?

Morgan joins Marcus Watson Jr. as the Coogs continue to establish their Louisiana pipeline. This might seem like a broken record at this point, but Bell led the charge on earning Morgan’s commitment. “He truly wants to see you do better. He truly wants to find ways to help you evolve on the field as well as off the field,” Morgan said of Houston’s WR coach.

The way that Bell addresses and teaches his players is something that Morgan appreciates. He mentioned the quizzes players take at the start of position meetings to verify their understanding of route concepts and assignments. The players made him feel at home as well, and he said they make it easy to “engage in meetings.”

Morgan comes from an athletic family. Josiah’s father, Jason, represented Jamaica in the 2012 Olympics as a discus thrower. He held the Jamaican national record for a throw of 68.19 meters. On his mother’s side, there are several collegiate and even an NFL player going back to his great-grandfather, Donnie Wallace. Most recently, Josiah’s uncle, Courtney Wallace, played defensive line at Louisiana Tech.

What Morgan brings on the field

Most of the players in Houston’s 2027 class have shown versatility, more specifically, flexibility to compete on both sides of the ball. But Morgan’s future is more concrete; he will play wide receiver for the Coogs. He will provide the offense with a player who can play different roles.

His route-running stands out. It’s precise, sharp. Even the best athletes at the high school level might round things off a bit or just trust their athleticism. But Morgan really runs routes with intent and purpose, and it allows him to create separation.

Like a lot of Louisiana WRs, Morgan runs tough after the catch. His build reminds me of a running back, and so does his running style. You also see the toughness in his ability to beat press off the line, and his willingness to catch the ball in traffic.

His play reminds me of current Coog pass catcher Amare Thomas. I think he has a bright future. And he hopes to compete for snaps early when he reports in the spring semester. Morgan has an official visit scheduled with Houston, May 28-30. He has a few other official visits scheduled, but he is unsure whether he will move forward with them.
