To open the 1998 season, Houston traveled to Berkeley to meet Cal. UH led until the final moments of the game, when Cal QB Justin Vedder threw a 34-yard TD pass 2:07 to play. In the 3rd quarter, Mike Waddell kicked the second-longest FG in school history (52 yards).
